Throw Back Thursday: “The Hobbit” Book Cover

A few years ago, I taught a design class to some of the middle schoolers at our homeschool co-op. We had a lot of fun working our way through Go by Chip Kidd. I had the students complete the design projects at the end of the book as a way to practice what they were learning. For each project, I made a sample. Design Project #5 is Redesign Something That You Love, so I chose to redesign the book cover for The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien.

I decided to redesign the cover for The Hobbit using abstract simplicity, and I think it’s one of my favorite design pieces.

Have you read the book? Can you decode the cover?
